PARENT INVOLVEMENT POLICY

PARENTS ARE PARTNERS AT JOHN F. KENNEDY MIDDLE SCHOOL

Parent involvement is an important role that is critical to the success of a child’s achievement in education. At John F. Kennedy Middle School we will strengthen our home-school-community partnership to ensure a safe student centered learning environment. Decades of research provided convincing evidence that parents are an important influence in helping their children achieve high academic standards. In short when parents are involved in education, children do better and schools improve. As parents you are encouraged to become more actively involved. Listed below are ways in which parent involvement is encouraged at John F. Kennedy Middle School:

ACTIVE PARENT PARTICIPATION & EDUCATION

· Parent involvement programs will be advertised in a timely manner through the use of news letters, flyers, website, e-mail (when available), phone calls, and the building marquee sign.

· Parents are invited to attend classroom activities, field trips, holiday parties, award assemblies, and to volunteer with all school related activities.

· Parents will be involved in the writing, development, and implementation of the Parent Involvement Policies, Parent-School Compact, and the School Improvement Plan.

· Parents are encouraged to join the Title 1 School-Wide Planning Committee and the P.T.S.O (Parent Teacher Student Organization) to promote interaction and communication among the school community.

· Parents may request the opportunity for regular meetings to offer suggestions and to participate in decisions related to the education of their child/children.

· Parental input will be sought and considered in all stages of a school-wide program and issues regarding Title 1 funding. Title 1 funds may be used to pay reasonable and necessary expenses associated with parent involvement activities, including transportation, childcare, or home visit expenses to enable parents to participate in school-related meetings and training sessions.

COMMUNICATION WITH PARENTS

· The school will maintain open communication between school, parents/guardians, and students at all times.

· The school news letter, The J.F.K. Stars will be sent home at the end of each grading period in English and Spanish.

· The Middle Years News and Home & School Connection publications will be sent home monthly in English and Spanish.

· Parents will be informed of the school curriculum and expected proficiency levels students are expected to meet through copies of MNPS Academic Standards and various assessment reports such as: Report Cards, Thinklink, etc).

· John F. Kennedy Middle School faculty and staff will provide timely responses to parents’ suggestions.

· A Parent-School Compact will be developed and signed by parents, teachers, and students.

· Parent surveys will be used at the beginning of the school year to gather data which will be used for school improvement.

MEETING WITH PARENTS

· P.T.S.O board meetings will be held on a regular basis as established by the committee.

· A school annual Open House will be held to welcome parents and students and to provide information about the school and the community.

· Parent/Teacher conferences are scheduled in October of each year; in addition, conferences will be held as requested by parents or teachers. Interpreters are available when needed.

· John F. Kennedy Middle School will provide, if requested by the parents, opportunities for regular meetings to formulate suggestions and to participate in decisions relating to the education of their children. Teachers will respond to any such suggestions as soon as practically possible.

· John F. Kennedy Middle School will provide materials and trainings to help parents work with their children to improve their children’s achievement, such as literacy training and using technology, as appropriate, to foster parent involvement.

· John F. Kennedy Middle School will partner with community groups and Pencil Partners to improve student achievement and foster parent involvement.

· John F. Kennedy Middle School will help students transition from previous tier to current tier, and from the current tier to the next tier (Pre K, Elementary, Middle, High, and College).

LOS PADRES SON PAREJAS EN JOHN F. KENNEDY MIDDLE SCHOOL

La participación de los padres es muy importante y critica en el buen desempeña académico de los estudiantes en la educación. En la escuela John F. Kennedy, nosotros aseguraremos una escuela de la comunidad que ofrezca un ambiente de aprendizaje centrado en el estudiante. Décadas de investigación convincentemente proveer evidencia de que los padres tienen una importante influencia en ayudar a sus hijos a alcanzar altos niveles académicos. Dicha de otro modo, cuando los padres se inuslucran en la educación de sus hijos, estos hacen mejor trabajo y la escuela mejora también. Como padres, les invitamos a estar más activos en la educación de sus hijos. A continuación hay una lista en las maneras que puede ayudar en John F. Kennedy.

Padres Activos

· Los programas para padres activos serán presentados en un tiempo razonable através de cartas, anuncios, página electrónica, correos-electrónicos (cuando este disponible), llamadas telefónicas y en el edificio de la escuela.

· Los padres están invitados a las actividades en el salón de clases, paseos, fiestas asambleas, y hacer trabajos voluntario en todo lo relacionado a la educación de sus hijos.

· Los padres estarán participando en la redacción, desarrollo, e implementación de la política de Parent School Compact, y el plan de mejoras de la escuela.

· Los padres están invitados y les animamos a pertenecer al Comité de Título I School Wide Planning y a PTSO (organización de padres, facultad, y estudiantes) para promover la interacción y comunicación entre la comunidad escolar.

· Los padres pueden pedir la oportunidad de tener reuniones regulares para ofrecer sugerencias y participar en decisiones relacionadas con la educación de sus hijos.

· Las sugerencias de los padres serán consideradas en todas las etapas del programa de la escuela en adición a los fondos de Título I.

Comunicación con los Padres

· La escuela mantendrá una comunicación abierta entre padres/guardianes, y estudiantes en todo momento.

· Las cartas de J.F.K. serán enviadas al final de cada périodo de calificaciones en inglés y español.

· La publicación de noticias a mitad de año será invitada a los hogares in inglés y español.

· Los padres serán informados del currículo escolar y los niveles de proficencia a través de copia de MNPS niveles académicos y varios reportes de evaluaciones como es el reporte de calificación.

· La facultad y el personal de J.F.K. le proveerá respuestas a las sugerencias y preguntas de los padres. Un Parent-School Compact será desarrollado entre padres, facultad, y estudiantes.

· Un cuestionario a los padres se usará para obtener información sobre como mejorar la escuela.

Reunión con Padres

· Las reuniones de PTSO serán continuamente como establecido por el comité.

· La casa obierta anual será para dar la bienvenida a los padres y estudiantes además de proveer información de la escuela y la comunidad.

La conferencia de padres y facultad será en Octubre de cada año, en adición a otras conferencias requendas por los padres o profesores. Interpretes
